Heritage at Dover Assisted Living

Dover DE

This 55,000 square foot assisted living residence for seniors, located in rural Dover, Delaware, is composed of two very distinct facilities that share a single service core—one dedicated to Alzheimer’s/memory care and the other to assisted living. The overall design of Heritage at Dover is intended to simulate a small hometown environment, complete with an interior main street and entrances to small shops from facility common spaces. Colorful awning-topped windows, brick window sills, wall-mounted street lamps, cushioned park benches and natural lighting from clerestory windows all contribute to a hometown feel and charm for program residents. A Country Kitchen, a Library/Chapel and a General Store provide fitting places for casual and informal resident interaction, helping to establish a sense of familiarity, comfort and community.

One single-story wing of the Heritage at Dover is a self-contained facility designed exclusively for persons with Alzheimer’s. At the perimeter of this wing are both studio and double units which surround a fully accessible, open-air courtyard and garden at its center. Staff at the facility work in adjacent service areas in order to provide support to the common living, dining and activity spaces. A pair of two-story residential wings were designed to provide individual neighborhoods within the defined town fabric, with assisted living units clustering around common areas featuring café tables and chairs, ceiling fans and ivy-covered trellises. Front porch elements throughout further enhance and support the hometown feel and atmosphere, providing a catalyst for ongoing neighborhood interaction.
