Golden Bear

Kutztown, PA

K&A served as lead architect for the master planning and design of this student residential community on the campus of Kutztown University in in rural Berks County. Situated on 14 acres of picturesque rolling hills, the new development, known on campus as Golden Bear Village (GBV), consists of a mix of both garden style and mid-rise apartment units, and offers a total of 1,000 new beds for the Kutztown student population in 4-, 5-, and 6-bedroom configurations.

With the aim, not only of providing much-needed housing to the university, but of unifying student life and creating a sense of community within the resident student body, the facades of the new community were designed to open on to a central green, while courtyards were incorporated as functional elements for many of the units, helping to accommodate for movement, and fostering informal recreation, interaction, socialization and study among university students.

The project features a variety of amenities specific to student residents, including a common area with central laundry room facilities, a TV lounge and game room, a study lounge, vending areas, washrooms, and a multi-function gathering space for use during special events. Administrative spaces for The Office for Student Life, maintenance offices, and a site maintenance area were also included in the Village’s program.

The success of the design approach behind GBV was apparent from the outset, helping to create a warm, welcoming and rich environment for all Kutztown University students, offering them independence and all of the comforts of apartment living without sacrificing the conveniences and security of on-campus housing.
