Dr. Walter G. Alexander Village Family Housing (Phase I) Orange, New Jersey
Much-Needed Revitalization for One New Jersey Community
This first phase of Walter G. Alexander Village is dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable housing opportunities for families, and is expected to act as a catalyst toward a multi-phased redevelopment of this once-distressed Orange, New Jersey neighborhood and surrounding community. Working off of a master planning process that was also led by K&A, the family housing component of Dr. Walter G. Alexander Village consists of four three-story buildings, offering a total of 66 new units of affordable family residences. Designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding neighborhood, Phase I offers the local community a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom configurations in two-story townhouses over one-story flats—each with individual entries either fronting the street or a courtyard.
With the first two phases of the project now complete, the new Dr. Walter G. Alexander Village neighborhood represents the beginning of what is expected to be a long-term process aimed at redeveloping the immediate area and reinvigorating the local economy. And due to the immediate success of these first two phases within the local community and neighborhood residents, plans to move forward with the next phase of revitalization have already begun. Phase III of Dr. Walter G. Alexander Village, expected to offer an additional 42 units of family and workforce housing, recently received final Planning Board approval, and is anticipated to be completed within the next 18-20 months.
