Salem Historic Homes Salem, New Jersey

This award-winning project helped to transform a once-decaying block in the heart of the historic, 300 year-old town of Salem into a beautiful affordable-housing neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The redevelopment was implemented in two phases through both new construction and the rehabilitation of existing homes in disrepair. Combined phases provided a total of 104 new rental apartments – 28 new units and 77 rehabbed units.

Interior layouts of the rehabbed units were carefully designed to accommodate modern needs while maintaining historically significant elements from their original floor plans. Apartments range from two to four bedrooms in flat and townhouse configurations. New infill dwellings were designed to blend seamlessly with their century-old neighbors by incorporating similar building proportions, window patterns and siding details. Common amenities include an on-site playground, common green space, and a community center.
