Nellie Reynolds Gardens Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

This new community completed for the Philadelphia Housing Authority comprises 80,000 square feet and contains sixty-four apartments units as well as a community center, recreation space, and full-service Adult Day Center. Nellie Reynolds was designed to comply with the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency’s (PHFA) “Energy Conservation Measures” and green building criteria in order to classify the project as a “green” building.

In addition to a number of sustainable elements related to materials, methods of construction, and finishes, a green roof was incorporated as a signature feature of sustainability. The green roof system helps regulate the building temperature, absorb rainwater, conserve water and energy resources and improve indoor air quality for residents. The Philadelphia Housing Authority has benefited from the manageable operational costs and improved maintenance procedures associated with many of the building’s features. As The Philadelphia Housing Authority’s first project with a green roof system, K&A’s design of Nellie Reynolds Gardens sets the bar for sustainable, affordable housing in the City of Philadelphia.
