Mercy LIFE of Alabama Mobile, Alabama

Mercy Medical Center (Mercy), a well-respected healthcare and senior living provider in southern Alabama, was selected as the sponsor for Alabama’s first PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) program. Pursuing their mission to help those less fortunate within their community, Mercy selected a vacant retail property, centrally located within their established service area, to transform into the LIFE Center where the programs, activities and services are offered for older adults.

This one-story, 18,000 square foot building, was gutted and fully renovated to create an inviting and invigorating place for frail seniors to come together and receive much-needed medical assistance. Mercy LIFE of Alabama serves approximately 180 seniors in the Mobile area who are enrolled in this program. Approximately half of the enrollees visit the center two to three days a week to socialize, recreate, and receive nutritional, personal, health and therapeutic care. Participants who do not attend the center receive medical, wellness, therapeutic and personal care services in their homes.

The fundamental design of the center is based on separation of the ‘daycenter,’ where participants gather for activities, from the clinic and administrative areas of the building. This decision was essential to creating a safe and secure environment for the seniors, while maintaining privacy in the clinical and administrative areas. Separating these two areas also reduced walking distances and improved wayfinding throughout the building. The open floor plan in the daycenter includes multiple bright and spacious rooms that allow easy access between activities and to the secure garden courtyard. Meals are served daily from the commercial kitchen that has a diner-style counter where participants can observe meal preparation and safely engage in cooking demonstrations. The fully equipped therapy gym and private personal care suites are conveniently located for daily use. The chapel, in a quiet corner of the center, is open daily for private reflection, Bible study, and weekly worship services.
