The Zane School Offices

Collingswood NJ

As a firm, it has long been one of K&A’s primary missions to encourage the reinvestment in existing downtown areas—by preserving these vital local centers through the renovation and adaptive re-use of key structures within their local fabric, the unique qualities and characteristics of the community are enhanced and further strengthened, and the traditional town center is successfully maintained.

The renovation of The Zane School Offices in downtown Collingswood, New Jersey is a great example of the successful adaptive reuse of an aging historically-certified building, a renovation process which ultimately created the conditions for the long-term revitalization of the downtown central core of Collingswood. At the end of the rehabilitation process, K&A took the opportunity to relocate our firm’s headquarters into the newly-completed building—simultaneously restoring the original grandeur of the school, establishing an anchor in downtown, and creating a customized, dynamic, new home for a 70+ person architectural firm.

The renovation of The Zane School Offices can be seen in almost every detail of the building—from the restored exterior masonry façades and neo-classical detailing to the original maple floorboards in the first floor entry and reception area. New design elements, such as the use of historic colors and a dramatic, curving, central staircase, capture the spirit of the firm by paying tribute to the past, addressing the present and paving the way toward a future for a firm, a building and a community.
