Salem Historic Homes

Salem NJ

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Salem Historic Homes is an award-winning project which helped to transform this once-decaying neighborhood in the heart of Salem, New Jersey—an historic town with over 300 years of history—into a revitalized, affordable housing community.

The rehabilitation and redevelopment of the existing homes at Salem was implemented in two distinct phases through the integration of both new construction and rehabilitation, ultimately providing a total of 104 new affordable rental opportunities for the Salem area, including twenty-eight (28) new apartments and seventy-seven (77) renovated apartments, saved from disrepair. Interior layouts of the renovated units were carefully designed to accommodate modern needs, while maintaining historically significant elements from their original floor plans.

Apartments at Salem Historic Homes range from two- to four-bedrooms units in both flat and townhouse configurations. New infill dwellings were designed to blend seamlessly with their century-old neighbors by incorporating similar building proportions, window patterns and siding details. Common amenities include an on-site playground, a community green space, and a community center.
