K&A provided complete A/E services for the renovation and adaptive reuse of an existing administration building on the campus of East Orange General Hospital. Encompassing an existing three-story brick and concrete tower, as well as an adjacent one-story portion of the 80 S. Munn Building, the design included selective demolition of interior partitions to create a total of 24 supportive housing units that will serve a population with mental illness. The residents are all physically able, so the interior space was reconfigured to create single room occupancy units, each with a private bathroom facility and fully functional kitchen. New building support spaces included a community lounge and dining area with adjacent warming kitchen, administrative and supportive services offices, flexible meeting spaces, and laundry facilities for tenant use.
Renovations to the building’s exterior included repair of the original brick shell, as well as replacement of existing windows with new, thermally efficiency models. A small addition was also built to accommodate a new elevator tower. This addition, centrally located off the community room, houses a new four-stop elevator from basement to third floor that provides an accessible route through the new facility.
