K&A provided complete architectural and engineering design services for the conversion and adaptive reuse of this vacant, five-story former factory structure in the Kensington neighborhood of North Philadelphia. The old textile factory was built in 1886 and was fully operational until the mid 1990s, when it was bought by the New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC). Coral Street Arts House offers twenty-seven (27) one- and two-bedroom units of affordable housing, as well as studio facilities for local low-income artists. The first floor of the newly-renovated building contains a community room, a lounge, management and leasing offices, as well as a common laundry facility.
The building is a typical example of the Kensington area’s industrial heritage and has been identified by the City of Philadelphia as having historic significance. In 2004, the structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
