(November 2, 2012) A special groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday, October 18 for Lawnside Senior Meadows – a senior affordable housing rental community in Lawnside, Camden County, NJ. Principal-In-Charge Mary M. Johannesen, AIA, LEEED AP and Project Architect Al Deluca were on-hand for the occasion, as well as Lawnside’s Mayor Mary Ann Wardlow, State Senator Donald Norcross and Anthony Marchetta, Executive Director of the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Financing Agency.

The new residence will be the result of both new construction and the adaptive-reuse of an historic school building to provide a total of 40 one-bedroom apartments homes for seniors. Classroom spaces in the old school will be converted into 16 senior apartment units, while a new 24 unit building will be constructed at the rear portion of the former school site.

The school building will be fully restored on the exterior to bring back the original architectural character while updating the interior spaces for contemporary senior living. The new adjacent building is designed to complement the character and historic charm of the original school. Both buildings will be made fully accessible and include many energy saving features. Estimated completion is Fall 2013. Congrats to the entire team on this project milestone!
