K&A was founded in 1971 by Benjamin W. Kitchen, AIA, who began providing architectural services for a small number of clients out of his home. Joined by his wife, Beth Kitchen, AICP, P.P., a professional planner, the two rapidly began expanding the family business with the addition of more services, projects and new employees.

K&A opened its first professional offices in Westmont, New Jersey where the firm grew until a larger space was needed to accommodate greater client demand and an increasing staff. In the summer of 1999, K&A moved to Collingswood, New Jersey where the firm provided its own professional services to adaptively reuse an old school building, The Zane School, into office space and a new home for the company. Today, the Collingswood office staffs close to 60 employees, including architects, planners, interior designers, drafts people, graphic artists, marketing and administrative personnel.
