Camp Salute and American Legion Post No. 107

2019 SHA Project of the Year Award Winners

Congratulations to The People for People Foundation of Gloucester County, in a joint venture with Conifer Realty LLC, of Camp Salute in Clayton, NJ. It is the first and only community in the United States built to provide permanent housing to veterans, their families, and the surviving spouses of veterans. Camp Salute offers 76 one- and two-bedroom apartments and townhomes featuring fully equipped kitchens with Energy Star appliances and fixtures. The residents have access to on-site amenities such as a community room, smart card laundry center, computer lab, and 24-hour emergency maintenance. Off-site within walking distance, they can easily access local shopping, dining, and public transportation. People for People provides workshops and support groups, addressing PTSD and abuse issues; they assist with access to all Veteran benefit programs.

Congratulations to the American Legion Post No.107 in Hoboken, NJ. The project includes six new supportive housing apartments for formerly homeless US Veterans. When Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey in 2012, the Legion suffered devastating damage, severely compromising its ability to provide services to homeless veterans and others. The new building is designed to withstand future flooding in low-lying Hoboken, with the Post, elevated to the second floor, and the housing units above. The Veteran’s Residence has been referred to by some as the future image of the American Legion. And rightfully so, it was designed with the future intent to expand on the adjacent city-owned property when the opportunity presents itself.
