Barclay Place, the First Hospital-Based Supportive Housing in New Jersey, Opens in Paterson
Thriven Design was thrilled to join New Jersey Community Development Corporation (NJCDC), Saint Joseph’s Health, the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA), Arc Building Partners, and other project partners Monday, July 10, for the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Barclay Place in Paterson, NJ.
Barclay Place is the first project of its kind developed under NJHMFA’s new Hospital Partnership Subsidy Program initiative, which recognizes innovative collaborations between housing and healthcare.
In response to research suggesting that access to stable housing that is both supportive and affordable improves health outcomes and lowers utilization of local emergency room and social services, the NJHMFA launched a $12 million Hospital Partnership Subsidy Program in 2019 to bring developers into partnership with community health care providers. The resulting projects, of which Barclay Place is the first, blend affordable and supportive housing with on-site medical services to create “anchor institutions” that stabilize the surrounding neighborhood, provide readily available healthcare and supportive services for residents, and reduce unnecessary, avoidable, or repeated hospital visits.
Barclay Place revitalizes a formerly vacant site just a block away from Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. The development includes a five-story 56-unit structure with 10 units set aside for individuals with special needs. The ground-floor, 3,000 SF tenant space will be operated by Saint Joseph’s Health, and will provide social, health, wellness, and counseling services to residents as well as individuals in the community. All aspects of the project’s design, from its neutral exterior palette to its low-rise construction, allow it to integrate harmoniously into the surrounding area, creating a sense of stability, connection, and support. Thriven Design is honored to have provided architecture, engineering, and interior design services for this project as well as partner with Langan Engineering and Environmental Services who provided civil engineering.
The project is a direct result of a special collaboration between two of Paterson’s most established stakeholders: Saint Joseph’s Health and the New Jersey Community Development Corporation. Their commitment to the future of the City of Paterson is evident in the success of Barclay Place, and it sets the precedent for future Hospital Partnership Subsidy Program initiatives statewide.
